Have you ever heard of Arrowtown before? It’s just a small village about 20km from Queenstown but it is famous for its gold! Yup, Arrowtown has gold in its river. Well, that’s what they say. The Lonely Planet and the Information Centre recommend you to rent a pan and try it out. So we did!
The Fox River in Arrowtown
The water was freezing, so after a few sessions I had enough. As you can see my boyfriend thought there was really some gold in there and tried a bit harder. Unfortunately no luck! I saw that Brooke Holm, a great photographer from Australia, was here a few months ago as well and she tried it and found a gold nugget. Have a look at her beautiful pictures!
Because of its gold, it is an old town with lots of gorgeous wooden cottages. In 1862 a small group of mine workers discovered the gold in the Fox river. Within a few weeks they collected about 113 kg of gold. Because of this the population of the small town grew very fast to about 7000 people. After 1865 the Chinese came and worked here while the European miners went to the west coast of New Zealand.
From here a beautiful road goes through the mountains and valleys to Wanaka. Another town close to Queenstown where lots of backpackers go skydiving. The views are great and we even saw an aeroplane making its way to Queenstown Airport. You can the aeroplane in the previous 2 pictures. Isn’t that great? We were almost at them same height as it.
Safe travels, xx
