Because of a big earthquake in 1931, the town Napier is build in Art Deco style. Nowhere in the world can you find such beautiful and still perfectly Art Deco architecture. I’ve never seen so many buildings in Art Deco style all together. The town is very famous with tourists and it is the most photographed town in New Zealand.
Some info about Napier
Napier is a seaport in New Zealand, located in Hawke’s Bay on the eastern coast of the north island. About 18 km from Napier is the inland city called Hastings. Together they are called the “Twin Cities” of New Zealand. The total population of Napier and Hastings is about 125.000 people.
The colors are so different than the ones we use now. For example, this yellow color with blue. No one uses this anymore right? It’s to bright. Every thing is pastel and light at the moment. Or we use some neon colors but that’s it.
During the Art Deco style periode architects used more vibrant colors. No one really cared about what other people thought about it. It was just totally new and trendy.
Gorgeous line and shapes. Little details but still all very modern and simplistic.
When we drove out of Napier we ran into this Art Deco Style building. A bit different with flower decorations but still very special.
Again lots of details, shapes and lining. Can you imagine building a house like this now?
I adore this style very much because this was a beginning of something different. People started to see and want new things in life, architecture and style. I wouldn’t want a house in this style now but I do appreciate the architecture a lot.
Have you seen any Art Deco style architecture somewhere which impressed you?
Safe travels, Claudia
