One of the latest rug trends is the kilim rug. Beautiful flat tapestry-woven rugs from the Balkans and Pakistan. In the western culture the kilim rugs are purely decorative but in the Balkans the rugs function as prayer rugs. Kilim means in Persian ‘to spread roughly’ but it could also be of Mongolian origin. When we travelled through Mongolia almost 2 years ago, I didn’t see any kilim rugs but they definitely use lots of rugs to cover their floors against the cold.

How are kilim rugs produced?

This is what I found in the following Encyclopedia of “Carpets v. Flat-woven carpets: Techniques and structures”;

Kilims are produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. Kilim weaves are tapestry weaves, technically weft-faced plain weaves, that is, the horizontal weft strands are pulled tightly downward so that they hide the vertical warp strands.

Types of kilim rug designs

There are so many different types of designs in kilim rugs. The Ardabil rugs have similar motifs to the Caucasian rugs but with more object woven into the borders. The colors are also a bit lighter. The most common designs on Ardabil rugs are diamond-shape medallions but the most recognized design is the famous Mahi (Herati) Design which is a diamond mediallon and a small fish.

Another motif that is used is the elibelinde, a female figure. The traditional colors of kilim rugs are red, pink, ivory, green and blue but some weavers added some more modern colors like purple and turquoise.

Rose kilim rugs

My latest favorite in the kilim rug collection are the rose kilim rugs. Instead of geometric shapes the rugs have flowery shapes and motifs. Most of the time the flowers are woven on a dark background. The rugs come from Moldavia and near the Black Sea.

I would love to get one for our apartment. It would fit so well with our other travel treasuries. What do you think? Would you go for a kilim rug or a rose kilim rug?
