One of the best things of New Zealand is the rough and special nature, especially their glaciers. The most popular one on the south island is Franz Josef glacier but if you want to save some money and see a glacier yourself, you can hike up to Fox Glacier yourself.
You are not allowed to go on this glacier without a guide, but the view is very spectacular. I’ve been on the Franz Josef glacier 4 years ago and I was surprised that you can actually hear the water dripping underneath you.
The glaciers are melting very quickly at the moment and they will be gone in a few dozen years.
It actually moves 1 meter per day, isn’t that unbelievable?
This valley is proof that the glacier was much bigger years and years ago. Now it’s just a valley with a river of the melting ice. This area seems very dangerous at night, as rocks roll down the hills all the time. During the day you can walk here but some signs say you are not allowed to stand still here…
So, if you want to see a glacier in real, you should go to New Zealand. There are no glaciers in the world that are so accesable as this one and as close to the ocean as fox glacier as well.
Safe travels, Claudia
