After being in Los Angeles for two and a half days, we left to explore the coast a bit more and drive up to San Francisco. We will be back in Los Angeles later to explore a bit more there. From Los Angeles we took Highway number One up north to Malibu and Santa Barbara. Malibu is where all the celebrities live in their beach houses. If you are lucky you can spot one or two on the beach, which is public, in front of their homes. We drove by and went on to Santa Barbara.

The American Riviera called Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is a pretty town with Mediterranean style architecture and lots of beautiful jasmine and orange blossoms. The main street of Santa Barbara is perfect for shopping and going to Starbucks (I think I saw 4) for a coffee.

Isn’t it lovely? All around Santa Barbara these trees were in blossom.

What to do in Santa Barbara? The county courthouse is worth visiting, the botanic garden or the zoo if you are travelling with kids. You can also go for sea tours or a surf lesson on the beach.

A great place for lunch in Santa Barbara is Eureka for great burgers and 28 tap beers. If you are vegetarian you should go to Silvergreens opposite of Eureka. They serve healthy and lots of vegan food.

I love these typical American style facade cinemas with letters instead of an electronically announcement board.

The hotels and motels are more expensive in Santa Barbara than the other towns on Highway One. We only wandered around Santa Barbara for the day and drove on to Santa Maria for the night.
