I don’t think it’s a secret that I really love Scandinavian design. When I started studying Interior Architecture about 10 years ago, Scandinavian design was one of my inspiration sources. The Scandinavians are really good in creating a simple and honest design due to the materials that they use but also the shapes and colors. You won’t find too many details or details that don’t matter in their designs. I guess “Less is more” is definitely something that suits the Scandinavian design.
About a week ago, I’ve been approached by Tove from Funky Doris, a new Norwegian brand. I often get emails with new brands and people who want me to write about them or their product but the email from Funky Doris was different. I mean, everything that says Scandinavian design catches my eye ;-)
A bit more about Funky Dove..
Their design philosophy is simple: they want to surround themselves with charming everyday products with a lastig quality. They find their style uncomplicated, warm and humorous. One of the things they say is: “God invented the giraffe, the elephant, the cat. He has no real style. He just goes on trying things” … a bit like them they say.
Funky Dove is established by Tove Trydal and Grethe Bjørk. Tove is a designer, design manager and marketing manager by profession. She worked for Nordicform and designed bedding, blankets, pillows and curtains. Grethe (I love that name!) ran the award winning retro shop Harry Camping in Stavanger. She redesigned clothing for them but she also was a costume designer for several films. Some of her clothing collections were also screened at the Oslo Fashion Week.
As you see they are both very good in designing products. That’s why the collection of Funky Doris is so appealing. It has a clean, modern and attractive look which is why I added them to my own interior. Let’s have a look at their collection first.
Don blanket and pillow
A really cool blanket made of combed cotton with a retro bold graphic pattern. On the other side of the blanket, the colors are inverted. The same counts for the Don pillow with graphic pattern from the sixties.
Albert and Gunnar pillows
When you really love a black and white interior, these pillows are the ones you should have. With a very strong and minimalistic design, these pillows are a statement in your home.
One of my favorites is the Herdis pillow. A gorgeous monochrome design to combine with other more striking designs. This pillow is the perfect fundament for a set of pillows on a couch.
A very typical Scandinavian designed pillow. It’s simple and stylish in a monochrome design.
The Vilma collection is a bit more striking than all the other products. Due to the colors that have been used, but also the pattern and shapes make it a very attractive blanket that will be seen in your interior.
My favorite is the Oskar pillow. The graphic honeycomb design really draws my attention. Especially together with a fundamental design like the Herdis pillow, this design looks amazing. It’s bright and colorful, cheerful but also simple and elegant.
Besides these gorgeous pillows and blankets, they also sell trays, lights and accessoires. One of my favorite lamps is the Draapen design. With the shape of a drop and made of brass and copper, this lamp is something that really fits in the contemporary interiors.
