In Holland we celebrate another type of Santa Claus kind of fest at the beginning of december. We call this type of fest ‘Sinterklaas’. It’s a event for the small children who believe that this person, Sinterklaas, is real and brings you presents when you were very sweet for the entire year.

Sinterklaas is an elderly and serious man with white hair and a long beard. He always wears a long red cape or chasuble over a traditional white bishop’s alband sometimes red stola, a red mitre and a ruby ring with a gold-coloured crosier in his hand. He rides a white horse which we call Amerigo. He always carries a big book with all the names of the children that tells him whether they have been good or naughty in the past year.

Luckily I found a great explanation in English about this event in our country, because sometimes it’s hard to explain to people why kids love him so much.

Anyway, when Sinterklaas arrives in Holland (it happened last Saturday) it is all over the news and children are sitting and waiting in front of the tv to see him and his companions arriving on a boat from Spain. Yes, he lives in Spain :-)

Now that he is in the country, children may put their shoe next to the front door so that Sinterklaas and his companions can leave the children something in their shoe every night. So, every morning they wake up and run down stairs to see what they’ve received from Sinterklaas. Of course Sinterklaas is very busy so he asks the parents to take care of this shoe business for him ;-)

Even grown up’s make a game of it to put their shoe next to the door and see what their partners puts in. That’s why we always look around for cheap presents around this time of year to put in the shoe. Preferably small presents that fit in the shoe.
