One of the best countries in the world for snorkeling and diving is Fiji. The Fiji Islands have many reef and pristine lagoons and that makes it an ideal destination for a snorkeling and diving holiday. Lots of resorts on the Fiji Islands have a coral reef just off the shore. It’s great for beginners and kids to just walk into the water and snorkel right away. The fish life is amazing with lots of colors and sizes around. The famous Mamanuca and Yasawa islands is a recommended if you want to go snorkeling.
Snorkeling in Fiji
A few amazing resorts for snorkeling in Fiji;
- Castaway Resort on the Mamanuca Islands (Definitely hop over to this resort for a look. This is where they filmed the movie Cast Away with Tom Hanks)
- Navutu Stars Resort on the Yasawa Islands
- Cousteau’s Fiji Resort in Savusavu
- Qamea Resort on the Qamea Island
These resorts are all a bit pricy though but incredibly beautiful. The resort we went to is cheap compared to these resorts I just mentioned. It’s called the Bounty Island Resort and is located in the Mamanuca Island group. It’s only a 30 minute boot ride away from the main island Viti Levu and has all the things you need. The rooms are basic, the pool is relaxing, the ocean and beach is just perfect, snorkeling is great, they offer diving courses and the food is also good.
Tip for vegetarian travellers;
As an vegetarian, I had some troubles with the food as they only offer a meal package for 75 Fiji Dollar per day but that always includes meat. So, I ordered from their separate menu which was fine but not very extensive. Unfortunately this is almost everywhere in Fiji. Vegetarians are a bit out of luck here. I would recommend to let them know before you arrive so they can arrange something for you.
You don’t have to bring your own snorkel but if you have one, I would. Some resorts charge a lot to rent a snorkel and some are cheap. Think about 25 – 50 Fiji Dollar to rent a snorkel.
Do you like snorkeling? I really like it but it depends on the ocean if I love it. If the ocean is to rough, to deep or to dark I freak out and get out of the water. Unfortunately I’m not such a water/ocean enthusiast. The fact that I don’t know what is out there freaks me out. So diving will be a very big challenge for me, a challenge I guess I’m not going to take anytime soon.
What about you? Do you get your padi and do you love to dive? Or are you as freaked out as me about the ocean?
