Another gorgeous place in New Zealand is the Tongariro National Park on the north island of New Zealand. It’s located at the south end of Lake Taupo and is about 796 km2 big. It has three active volcanoes; Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro. The middle one, Mount Ngauruhoe is used as Mount Doom in the Lord of Rings movies.
The nature in Tongariro National Park
Besides the super famous Tongariro Crossing, you can also do other beautiful hikes here and go skiing in winter. It is the first National Park of New Zealand that came on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Tongariro crossing is really popular with tourists. It’s a walk you can do in one day, although in bad weather it is a bit harder. Besides the very busy crossing, you can also walk to the Tama lakes, waterfalls and other valleys around and in between the volcanoes.
Whatever you do, the view will be amazing!
The photos you see here are taken on our walk to the Tama lakes. These are crater lakes on the foot of the other volcanoes. Gorgeous views and about 5 or 6 hour return. The weather was perfect, not too many people and some lunch for on the way. I couldn’t be better ;-)
I’m always very fascinated by volcanoes, are you too? I really liked our walk up to Mount Batur in Bali which is also a volcano.
Safe travels, Claudia
